Quarantine Film Log

Updated: Oct 6, 2020

What I've watched since March something when quarantine began. Films, short and feature-length, getting me "through" this "time." Updated periodically, sometimes with notes, sometimes without.

This still from Le quattro volte (2010) captures a very relevant surreality and nudging toward disaster.

  1. No Reservations (2007) - comforting.

  2. One True Thing (1998)

  3. Days of Wine and Roses (1962)

  4. The Farewell (2019)

  5. Thank You for Smoking (2005)

  6. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972)

  7. Blind Alley (1939)

  8. My Name is Julia Ross (1945)

  9. Welcome to L.A. (1976)

  10. Circus of Books (2019)

  11. Party Girl (1995) - I like libraries and Parker Posey, so.

  12. So Dark the Night (1946)

  13. Johnny O'Clock (1947)

  14. Desert Hearts (1985) - one of my new favorites in cinematography.

  15. Tord and Tord ((Short)) (2010)

  16. Butter Lamp ((Short)) (2013)

  17. The Talk of the Town (1942)

  18. Logorama ((Short)) (2009) - everyone should see this. Animated capitalist petro-dystopia - very much real.

  19. Water Lilies (2007) - Celine!!

  20. Have A Good Trip (2020)

  21. Taris ((Short)) (1931)

  22. In A Lonely Place (1950)

  23. Columbus (2017) - loved the architecture, didn't love the relationship or acting.

  24. Guava Island (2019)

  25. Fits and Starts (2017) - really disliked this.

  26. The Watermelon Woman (1996) - amazing.

  27. 13th (2016)

  28. I Like It Like That (1994)

  29. Symbiopsychotaxiplasm Take One (1968) - I found this fascinating. Going to be thinking about it for a while.

  30. Shakedown (2018) - Please watch this film. Black lesbian joy. Ephemerality of queer spaces. Policing.

  31. Le quattro volte (2010) - this film had some of the most beautiful cinematography (Andrea Locatelli) I've seen, a gaze that feels somewhat similar to Terrence Malick's.

  32. The Living End (1992)

  33. Call Your Father ((Short)) (2016)

  34. Whirlpool (1934)

  35. Slightly French (1949)

  36. The Big Heat (1953)

  37. Pickpocket (1959)

  38. Hooker on Campus (2007)

  39. Storm Center (1956)

  40. Walkabout (1971)

  41. My Own Private Idaho (1991)

  42. Presentation, or Charlotte and Her Steak ((Short)) (1951)

  43. But I'm A Cheerleader (1999)

  44. Becoming (2020)

  45. Joni Mitchell: Woman of Heart and Mind (2003)

  46. Lucky Grandma (2019)

  47. The Bigamist (1953)

  48. In the Mood for Love (2000)

  49. Some Like It Hot (1959)

  50. Hopscotch (1980)

  51. Wendy and Lucy (2008)

  52. An Act of Love ((Short)) (2018)

  53. Disclosure (2020)

  54. The 39 Steps (1935)

  55. Graduate First (1978)

  56. The Girl on a Motorcycle (1968)

  57. The Acquaintances of a Lonely John ((Short)) (2008)

  58. Rafiki (2018)

  59. Puberty Blues (1981)

  60. Criss Cross (1949)

This list concludes around late August. The generalized 'quarantine' condition has, of course, not ended, but the idea of typifying every film I view as 'a quarantine watch' ad infinitum is, simply put, horrifying.

Presentation, or Charlotte and Her Steak (1951).
